A systematic investigation of dust emission associated with ionized gas has so far been performed only in our Galaxy and for wavelengths longer than 60 μm. Newly available Spitzer data now offer the opportunity to carry out a similar analysis in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). By cross-correlating Spitzer Surveying the Agents of a Galaxy's Evolution (SAGE) data with the Australia Telescope Compact Array/Parkes H I 21 cm data, the NANTEN ^(12)CO (J = 1-0) data, and both the Southern H-Alpha Sky Survey Atlas Hα and the Parkes 6 cm data, we investigate the physical properties of dust associated with the different phases of the gas (atomic, molecular, and ionized). In particular, we study the presence and nature of dust from 3.6 to 160 μm and for various regimes of ionized gas, spanning emission measures from ~1 pc cm^(–6) (diffuse compo...

Congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) is one of the most common autosomal recessive disorders in humans, and 21-hydroxylase deficiency (21-OHD) accounts for 90 to 95% of all cases of CAH. Approximately 95% mutations are a consequence of recombination between the CYP21A2 and its highly homologous pseudogene CYP21A1P. Recently, other rare mutations have been identified, increasing the number of reported mutations to more than eighty. The in vitro enzyme assay for the detection of mutated 21-hydroxylase is a well-established method. In this study, we report the characterization of the R483Q mutation using a novel in vitro enzyme assay, liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry (LC-ESI-MS/MS). With this system, we evaluated the activity of the R483Q mutation. The enzyme activities of 21-hydroxylase in the conver...
The objective of this paper is to construct a catalog providing the dust properties and the star formation efficiency (SFE) of the molecular clouds in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). We use the infrared (IR) data obtained with the Spitzer Space Telescope as part of the "Surveying the Agents of a Galaxy's Evolution" Legacy survey as well as the IRAS data. We also work with extinction (A_v) maps of the LMC. A total of 272 molecular clouds have been detected in the LMC in a previous molecular survey, accounting for 230 giant molecular clouds (GMCs) and 42 smaller clouds. We perform correlations between the IR emission/extinction and atomic and molecular gas tracers. We compare the atomic gas that surrounds the molecular cloud with the molecular gas in the cloud. Using a dust emission model, we derive the physical properties of dust insi...
We present the results of N_2H^+ (J = 1-0) observations toward Serpens South, the nearest cluster-forming, infrared dark cloud. The physical quantities are derived by fitting the hyperfine structure of N_2H^+. The Herschel and 1.1 mm continuum maps show that a parsec-scale filament fragments into three clumps with radii of 0.1-0.2 pc and masses of 40-230 M_☉. We find that the clumps contain smaller-scale (~0.04 pc) structures, i.e., dense cores. We identify 70 cores by applying CLUMPFIND to the N_2H^+ data cube. In the central cluster-forming clump, the excitation temperature and line-width tend to be large, presumably due to protostellar outflow feedback and stellar radiation. However, for all the clumps, the virial ratios are evaluated to be 0.1-0.3, indicating that the internal motions play only a minor role in the clump support. Th...
