Zinc concentrations of human spermatozoa from the vaso-epididymis and ejaculate have been determined by a x-ray fluorescence technique and atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The mean zinc value was 79 µg/g dry weight of vaso-epididymal and 1242 µg/g dry weight of ejaculated spermatozoa. The results indicate that one of the functions of the human prostate is to afford zinc to spermatozoa.
The magnesium concentration has been estimated by atomic absorption spectrophotometry in 26 specimens of human spermatozoa and 30 specimens of seminal plasma. The mean value was 966.2 µg per g dry weight (range 318 to 1914) of spermatozoa and 126. 2 µg per ml (range 42 to 242) of seminal plasma.
Introduction: Wavelet transform is used for time-frequency analysis. Recently, discrete wavelet transform (DWT) has been used to analyze R-R interval or heart rate variability. However, we hypothesized that wavelet packet transform (WPT) is a better way to analyze such variability. In the present study, we compared resolution of frequency band and amplitude, which are used for analysis of the variability, with DWT and WPT, followed by Hilbert transform. Methods: A chirp signal which covers all frequency bands used for R-R interval variability was employed as a simulated signal. Levels 1-6 of DWT and level 3 of WPT were used for signal analysis. Amplitudes of the gained signal were evaluated with Hilbert transform. Differences in error of the gained amplitude from expected amplitude between CWT and DWT for low-frequency (LF) and high-fr...
Introduction: An elastic mechanical counter pressure (MCP) glove for spacesuits is under development. in this study we compared handgrip and pinch grip strength levels for the MCP glove and the current extravehicular mobility unit (EMU) gas-pressurized glove. Methods: We employed handgrip and pinch grip dynamometers to assess strength levels and von Frey monofilaments to evaluate hand sensitivity. Tests were conducted with the gloved hand inserted in an evacuation chamber at 200 mmHg below atmospheric pressure to simulate conditions in space. Results: Average bare hand strength was 463 N and decreased to 240 N for EMU and 250 N for MCP. Pinch grip and key grip testing showed no difference among conditions. However, there was a significant decrease in palmar grip strength from 111 N barehanded to 67 N in both gloves. Barehanded enduranc...
DIP Conray (a 220ml vial of 30w/v% Conray), a new contrast dye for drip infusion pyelography was used on 27 patients with urological diseases. The advantages of DIP with DIP Conray (220 ml vial) were as follows. 1) DIP Conray is excellent contrast medium in drip infusion pyelography. 2) No severe side effect was seen. 3) DIP Conray is convenient to use, not necessary to be diluted with 5 % glucose solution etc.

The rectal bladder was constructed in 9 patients according to Staehler's lateral intrasphincteric colostomy. We performed the procedure in a single run, and obtained satisfactory results. The subjects ranged from 2 to 68 years in age, and had original diseases of bladder cancer (8 patients) and intractable urethral stricture (1 patient). The follow-up period ranged from 11 months to 3 years and 3 months, Postoperative complications included recurrent pyelonephritis, retroperitoneal hematoma and distortion of rectal bladder. Persistent disturbance of serum electrolytes did not occur. Eight of the 9 patients are currently leading comfortable life, with satisfactory defecation and urination. One patient, who underwent urinary diversion for palliative purposes, died of advanced cancer one year and 3 months afterwards. To our regret, the li...
