[[abstract]]Abstract This paper consists of four parts. Firstly, we explain how to calculate the degrees of freedom in bosonic open string theory. We then calculate the zero-norm states at mass level m^2 = 8. This calculation provides a concrete example for the formula of count- ing between degrees of freedom in the book [1]. Moreover, we give an explicit answer to show the existence of zero-norm state degeneracy at m^2 = 8. Secondly, we show the gauge transformations on the positive-norm states at mass level m^2 = 6. Thus, explaining all the equivalent representations of positive-norm states are indeed differ by zero-norm states. Thirdly, we check the stringy Ward identities for one massive tensor scattering with 4 tachyon states, and we find an interesting connection between 5-point Ward identities and recursion relations of hypergeo...
The Stokes multipliers in the matrix models are invariants in the string-theory moduli space and related to the D-instanton chemical potentials. They not only represent non-perturbative information but also play an important role in connecting various perturbative string theories in the moduli space. They are a key concept to the non-perturbative completion of string theory and also expected to imply some remnant of strong coupling dynamics in M theory. In this paper, we investigate the non-perturbative completion problem consisting of two constraints on the Stokes multipliers. As the first constraint, Stokes phenomena which realize the multi-cut geometry are studied in the Z_k symmetric critical points of the multi-cut two-matrix models. Sequence of solutions to the constraints are obtained in general k-cut critical points. A discre...

We extensively study BPS solutions of the low energy effective theory of M5-brane in large C-field background. This provides us an opportunity to explore the interactions turned on by C-field background through the Nambu-Poisson structure. The BPS states considered in this paper include the M-waves, the self-dual string (M2 ending on M5), tilted M5-brane, holomorphic embedding of M5-brane and the intersection of two M5-branes along a 3-brane.
