Indisputably valued in contemporary times, the short story proves that, despite the frequently claimed crisis of narrative, the taste of telling (and reading) tales hasn’t faded at all. As one would expect, the practice of this short narrative form requires a theoretical approach that, while pointing out
invariant generic features, also accounts for the configurations
that the short story takes on presently. Whether in relation to
contemporary or to past writers, the affinities of the genre to
lyrical poetry are usually emphasized in all short story theories. That being the case, when it becomes poetic, we
could assert, following in Jorge Luís Borges’s footsteps, that
telling a tale is also singing it.

Apart from a short description of the dit and the lai, in this paper we intend to gather a number of French texts belonging to these genres and show their affinities with the medieval forms of the short story. With this purpose in mind we referred, in particular, to the Dit de Freire Denize Le

The book A Casa do Fim by young writer José Riço Direitinho is made up of ten short and independent stories, stories of life and, above all, of death, played by unusual characters. The writer shapes a strongly rural fictional universe, where he mingles what is real and what is fantastic.
A Casa do Fim is a structurally and semantically fractured story, where deep wisdom and ancestral habits are passed on from mother to daughter. The son atones for the sins of the father, and suicide is shown to be a fatal necessity.

Nuno de Montemor shapes his storyline by placing rural characters in a community village. The characteristics of
their customs and lifestyle are mainly conveyed through their
actions, giving special emphasis to their solidarity and
generosity.

The intention of this paper is to suggest some reading guidelines of some eighteenth century Portuguese “chapbooks”. It’s our purpose to see them as a reflection and a continuation of traditional oral culture (where the literary short story has its own origin) as well as predecessors of literary (and printing) practices that shape the so-called “mass literature”.

After the presentation of the short stories volume for children, “Estranhões e Bizarrocos”, written by José Eduardo
Agualusa, we will show that the apparent parody as well as
other procedures of textual transformation help to define a
complex model of Fantastic Literature, suitable for children
and adults alike. We also refer to the contribution given by the
very beautiful illustrations included, complementing the
written text.
