Calculation of displacement by direct integration of measured acceleration is subject to integration windup problems. To calculate the vertical displacement of ship the difficulties of double step of integration would be more problematic because we are facing with low frequency vibration with high amplitude especially when the purpose is retrieving time history displacement for a long period of time. In this paper the advantage and disadvantages of different suggested method to calculate the displacement from low frequency vibrations in case of measured acceleration of a boat are investigated and in order to have a more accurate result a Kalman filter based method is proposed for systems with known constant average displacement. Integration wind-up is eliminated by incorporating an additional state variable, namely the integral of the ...
Objective: To test the hypothesis that: (i) functional microvascular dilator capacity is independently associated with insulin sensitivity and age in individuals with central adiposity at risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD); and (ii) functional microvascular dilator capacity is improved by high dose statin treatment.
Methods: Functional dilator capacity (measured as change in laser Doppler blood flux from baseline during post occlusive reactive hyperemia [peak flux%resting flux; PF%RF] and flowmotion (power spectral density [PSD] analysis)) were assessed in 40 people with central adiposity and one or more other CVD risk factors. Measurements were made at rest and during acute hyperinsulinaemia before and six months after high dose atorvastatin (40 mg daily) or placebo.
Results: Insulin-induced change in PF%RF was independently assoc...
Objective and design: to examine whether inhibitors of the MAPK pathways will influence the response of bovine chondrocytes cultured in agarose constructs to IL-1beta and dynamic compression.
Methods: dose-response studies were conducted under IL-1beta conditions with either SB203580, SP600125, PDTC or curcumin. In separate experiments, constructs were treated with IL-1beta and an appropriate concentration of inhibitor and subjected to 15% dynamic compression. Nitrite and PGE2 release, 35SO4 and [3H]-thymidine incorporation were subsequently measured using biochemical assays.
Results: all inhibitors reduced the IL-1beta induced nitrite and PGE2 release in a dose-dependent manner. The inhibition of [3H]-thymidine incorporation by IL-1beta was partially reversed with SB203580, SP600125 or curcumin, but not PDTC. In most cases, the inhi...
Worldwide, approximately 405 000 cases of oral cancer (OSCC) are diagnosed each year, with a rising incidence in many countries. Despite advances in surgery and radiotherapy, which remain the standard treatment options, the mortality rate has remained largely unchanged for decades, with a 5-year survival rate of around 50%. OSCC is a heterogeneous disease, staged currently using the TNM classification, supplemented with pathological information from the primary tumour and loco-regional lymph nodes. Although patients with advanced disease show reduced survival, there is no single pathological or molecular feature that identifies aggressive, early-stage tumours. We retrospectively analysed 282 OSCC patients for disease mortality, related to clinical, pathological, and molecular features based on our previous functional studies [EGFR, αvβ...
Background: Impulsive drive for immediate reward (IDIR) and delay aversion are dissociable elements of the preference for immediate over delayed rewards seen in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). We hypothesized that IDIR would be associated with dopamine regulating genes and delay aversion would be associated with serotonin-regulating genes.
Methods: Impulsive drive for immediate reward and delay aversion were measured in 459 male children and adolescents (328 ADHD and 131 unaffected siblings) with a laboratory choice task. The sample was genotyped for the 5HTT (SLC6A4) promoter serotonin-transporter-linked polymorphic region polymorphism and a DAT1 (SLC6A3) 40-base pair variable number tandem repeat located in the 3′-untranslated region of the gene.
Results: There was no effect of dopamine transporter (DAT)1 on IDIR. ...
Turbulent polydispersed multiphase flows are encountered in many engineering and environmental
applications and particularly in combustion applications, spray polydispersity is the norm rather than the
exception. In this review we summarize the current state of Eulerian transport models for turbulent
polydispersed particulate flows without size class discretization. The stochastic nature of both carrier and
dispersed phase justifies a stochastic approach to describe the behavior of such systems. In this regard
Brownian motion of a single microscopic particle is discussed to intuitively introduce the subject and
point out the need for a stochastic representation of the phenomena based on stochastic differential
equations (SDEs). Understanding the stochastic tools and mathematical framework based on Langevin
equation is compulsory for th...
