The purpose of this study was to determine if agriscience teacher integration of instructional technology was related to student achievement. Knowledge of these correlations will assist teacher educators in offering more appropriate professional development opportunities for agriscience teachers. This information will also assist secondary schools in making decisions regarding technology purchases for agriscience departments. Instructional technology researchers have worked since the 1960s to gain a better understanding of the role that instructional technology plays in student achievement. Many researchers have found that instructional technology influences student learning. In the early 1980s Richard Clark published controversial findings that media has no influence on student learning. These conflicting findings led to the developme...
The purpose of this study was to determine important elements and placement practices of student teaching as perceived by teacher educators and how well each student teacher perceived his/her quality of experience based on these criteria. Data were collected using mail questionnaires following procedures by Dillman (2000). Three different mail questionnaires were used to gather information from 50 different head teacher educators (35 responding), 77 teacher educators (45 responding), and 204 student teachers from the 2001-2002 academic school year (140 responding).
Head teacher educator respondents indicated that the number one placement practice for placing student teachers was that of the cooperating teacher having at least three years teaching experience (mean=4.61)
Teacher educator respondents indicated that a cooperating center ...
Prior research suggests that the use of accounting information differs substantially by investor class. My analysis extends this line of research to the area of SEC Form 8-K filings. Prior research also provides mixed evidence on the informativeness of these filings. I hypothesize that the method of the disclosure is an important factor in evaluating 8-K usefulness to varying types of investors. Specifically, the timing, venue, and packaging of these accounting disclosures affect their use by investors. Regulation Fair Disclosure (2000) considers both press releases and 8-K filings as broad-based disclosures that do not favor any investor class. I, however, identify five unique informational settings in which 8-K filings occur. The five settings are: a concurrent 8-K event and filing (with or without a press release), a filing which ...
The texture of tortillas was improved by the addition of maltogenic amylase and carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) and guar gum to fresh masa from ground nixtamal (FNM) and nixtamalized corn flour (NCF) masa. Differences in the performance of additives in tortillas held under refrigeration or ambient storage were documented. For NCF tortillas, significant improvements were obtained in objective and subjective texture measurements by two treatments. Tortilla texture was improved by a treatment with a high enzyme level (170 mg/kg of maltogenic α-amylase, 0.14% CMC, 0.85% guar) as measured by objective tests and by a treatment with low enzyme level (60 mg/kg of maltogenic α-amylase, 0.43% CMC, 0.57% guar) as measured by subjective tests. The addition of maltogenic α-amylase (70 mg/kg) and CMC (0.35%) to FNM tortillas at levels similar to the l...
This study is intended to examine the relationship between peer coaching skills and the improvement in instruction among preservice special educators. The study will examine: a) preservice teacher instructional skill before and after coaching, b) the effects of lesson planning activities by the preservice teacher on classroom instruction, and c) coaching methodologies and the use of systematic structured observation instruments during coaching. Qualitative and quantitative analysis of case studies were utilized to ascertain the effect of peer coaching and coaching on a preservice teacher's ability to plan and implement improved instruction to their students. This study is intended to assist the improvement of preservice special education teacher training by enhancing their ability to provide feedback regarding effective instructional ...
Salient contour detection is an important lowlevel visual process in the human visual system, and has significance towards understanding higher visual and cognitive processes. Salience detection can be investigated by examining the visual cortical response to visual input. Visual response activity in the early stages of visual processing can be approximated by a sequence of convolutions of the input scene with the difference-of-Gaussian (DoG) and the oriented Gabor filters. The filtered responses are unusually high for prominent edge locations in the image, and are uniformly similar across different natural image inputs. Furthermore, such a response follows a power law distribution. The aim of this thesis is to examine how these response properties could be utilized to the problem of salience detection. First, I identify a method to fi...
Saltcedar is an invasive shrub that has moved into western United States riparian areas and is continuing to spread. Saltcedar is a phreatophyte that can utilize a saturated water table for moisture once established and is also highly tolerant of saline soil and water conditions. Literature has indicated that depth to the water table and salinity have a significant effect on growth and water use by saltcedar. Several studies were initiated to help develop a simulation model of saltcedar growth and water use based on the EPIC9200 simulation model. A study was initiated at the USDA-ARS Blackland Research Center Temple, Texas in the summer of 2002 to better understand the effects of water table depth and salinity on (1) saltcedar above and below ground biomass, root distribution, leaf area and (2) water use. Five different salinity levels...
This dissertation investigates various issues of interest regarding the workings and uses of commodity futures markets. Chapter II evaluates the relative performances of various estimators of bid-ask spreads in futures markets using commonly available transaction data. Results indicate a wide divergence in the performance of the competing estimators. This chapter also examines the effect of automating trading on spreads in commodity futures markets. Results indicate that spreads generally widened after trading was automated on the markets considered, and the tendency for spreads to widen during periods of high volatility increased. These results are in contrast to those found in higher volume financial futures markets.
Chapter III investigates various unresolved issues regarding futures markets, using formal methods appropriate f...
This study proposes two methods, (1) a probabilistic method based on historical oil prices and (2) a method based on Gaussian simulation, to model future prices of oil. With these methods to model future oil prices, we can calculate the ranges of uncertainty in traditional probability indicators based on cash flow analysis, such as net present values, net present value to investment ratio and internal rate of return. We found that conventional methods used to quantify uncertainty which use high, low and base prices produce uncertainty ranges far narrower than those observed historically. These methods fail because they do not capture the "shocks" in oil prices that arise from geopolitical events or supply-demand imbalances. Quantifying uncertainty is becoming increasingly important in the petroleum industry as many current investment...
Manufacturers of digital circuits test their products to find defective parts so they are not sold to customers. Despite extensive testing, some of their products that are defective pass the testing process. To combat this problem, manufacturers have developed a metric called defective part level. This metric measures the percentage of parts that passed the testing that are actually defective. While this is useful for the manufacturer, the customer would like to know how long it will take for a manufacturing defect to affect circuit operation. In order for a defect to be detected during circuit operation, it must be excited and observed at the same time. This research shows the correlation between defect detection during automatic test pattern generation (ATPG) testing and normal operation for both combinational and sequential ci...
