This research presents a procedure for interactive segmentation and automatic tracking of moving objects in a video sequence. The user outlines the region of interest (ROI) in the initial frame; the procedure builds a refined mask of the dominant object within the ROI. The refined mask is used to model a spline template of the object to be tracked. The tracking algorithm then employs a motion model to track the template through a sequence of frames and gathers the 3D affine motion parameters of the object from each frame. The extracted template is compared with a previously stored library of 3D shapes to determine the closest 3D object. Motion blur is one important method for increasing the visual quality of real-time applications. This is increasingly true in the area of interactive applications, where designers often seek to add graphical flair or realism to their programs. These applications often have animated characters with a polygonal mesh wrapped around an animated skeleton; and as the skeleton moves the mesh deforms with it. This thesis presents a method for adding a geometric motion blur to a deforming polygonal mesh. The scheme presented tracks an object's motion silhouette, and uses this to create a polygonal mesh. When this mesh is added to the scene, it gives the appearance of a motion blur on a single object or particular character. Six radiation dosimetry and medical physics problems were analyzed using a beta version of MCNP 5 as part of an international intercomparison of radiation dosimetry computer codes, sponsored by the European Commission committee on the quality assurance of computational tools in radiation dosimetry. Results have been submitted to the committee, which will perform the inter-code comparison and publish the results independently. A comparison of the beta version of MCNP 5 with MCNP 4C2 is made, as well as a comparison of the new Doppler broadening feature. Potential arsenic toxicity in different geologic environments is dependent on total arsenic concentration and arsenic bioavailability. It is important to identify the geologic environments that may sequester arsenic because these systems can act as long-term sources for arsenic as well as retard transport and limit toxicity. New, rapid techniques to quantify the different pools of soil organic matter (SOM) are needed to improve our understanding of the dynamics and spatio-temporal variability of SOM in terrestrial ecosystems. In this study, total organic carbon (TOC) and oxidizable organic carbon (OCWB) fraction were calibrated and predicted by mid- and near-DRIFT spectroscopy in combination with partial least squares (PLS) regression method. Sorghum downy mildew (SDM) of maize is caused by the oomycete Peronosclerospora sorghi (Weston and Uppal) C. G. Shaw. The disease can cause devastating yield losses in maize (Zea mays L.). Quantitative trait loci (QTLs) mediating resistance to SDM were mapped using both restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLPs), and simple sequence repeats (SSRs) in 220 F2 individual maize progeny derived from a cross between two extremes; highly susceptible inbred parent SC-TEP5-19-1-3-1-4-1-1 (white) and highly resistant inbred P345C4S2B46-2-2-1-2-B-B-B (yellow). Quantum error correction codes were introduced as a means to protect quantum information from decoherance and operational errors. Based on their approach to error control, error correcting codes can be divided into two different classes: block codes and convolutional codes. There has been significant development towards finding quantum block codes, since they were first discovered in 1995. In contrast, quantum convolutional codes remained mainly uninvestigated. In this thesis, we develop the stabilizer formalism for quantum convolutional codes. This study proposes a new, easily applied method to quantify uncertainty in production forecasts based on reservoir simulation. The new method uses only observed data and mismatches between simulated values and observed values as history matches of observations progress to a final "best" match. The method is applicable even when only limited information is available from a field. Previous methods suggested in the literature require more information than our new method. Quantifying uncertainty in production forecasts (i.e., reserve estimates) is becoming increasingly important in the petroleum industry. Protein-ligand and protein-protein interactions are critical to cellular function. Most cellular metabolic and signal tranduction pathways are influenced by these interactions, consequently molecular level understanding of these associations is an important area of biochemical research. We have examined the thermodynamics of several protein-protein associations and the protein-ligand interactions that mediate them. Using Fluorescence Correlation Spectroscopy, we have examined the putative interaction between pig heart malate dehydrogenase (MDH) and citrate synthase (CTS). We demonstrate a specific, low-affinity interaction between these enzymes.
