Dairy producers in the Netherlands are struggling to stay in business due to increased environmental legislation, population density, intensity of farming systems, costs of production and quota restrictions. One option available to Netherlands dairy farmers is to liquidate the value of their assets, put the money into an international bank, and buy an established dairy farm in the United States. The primary objective of this research is to compare the economic viability of a Netherlands dairy farmer staying in the Netherlands versus moving to the United States, assuming they will bring over all of their equity to put towards the purchase of a U.S. farm. The hypothesis that a Dutch dairy farmer would have a greater probability of economic success by relocating to the U.S was tested using a whole farm simulation model (FLIPSIM) to simula...
A drip type rainfall simulator and an existing watershed study were used to assess relationships between runoff, infiltration, erosion and associated risk thresholds on a range watershed in Brazos County, Texas. The focus of the research was determining erosion risk associated with seasonal variations in precipitation and vegetation. The objectives were to (1) develop a climatic profile for Brazos County, Texas, (2) evaluate relationships between vegetative cover, infiltration, runoff, and climatic events, (3) quantify erosion/ runoff risk associated with measured vegetation, soil moisture, and climatic events, and (4) identify potential managerial thresholds for erosion risk management on similar range watersheds. The current year climatic profile showed the wettest season was summer with thirty-two percent of the precipitation coming...
It is nice to give animators artistic freedom, but having to animate every bounce, sway, and counter-balancing movement of a rider on a horse isn't freedom at all. It is painstaking labor that could easily be prevented with an effective character setup. If an animation piece is only going to have a few shots with a horse and rider, then the trouble of setting up an automated character rig is not practical, but if there are a significant amount of shots with a horse and rider galloping across the prairie, doing death defying stunts, and walking for an extended time into the sunset then there needs to be a way to automate the reactions of the rider to the horse. This thesis focuses on what parts of a horse one can analyze to know at what point a rider will lean forward, bounce up from the saddle, or in any way react to a variety of diffe...
The primary purpose of this research was to develop a model for a professional science master’s program combining biotechnology and business. The objectives were to identify stakeholder preferences for various dimensions of a professional science master’s program combining biotechnology and business and to identify differences in priorities between subgroups. A secondary purpose was to examine user preferences between Web-based and traditional methods of conducting a Delphi study and the panelist’s impressions of its usefulness for program development. Prior to the first round, demographic data were collected on panelists regarding their gender, age, years experience in their current field, position title and education levels. Round 1 started with eight open-ended questions designed to investigate (a) learning objectives, (b) internshi...
Using human capital theory and social capital theory, I develop a model to explain the circumstances surrounding outside director appointments, patterns of outside board affiliations and outside director exits. I investigate why individuals become outside directors, why they continue to serve as directors after appointment, and why they terminate their service on boards. I find that an executive's home firm career and prestigious affiliations predict the likelihood and patterns of outside directorship service. Outside directors are critical to effective corporate governance, and to understand the board-governance process we need a better understanding of outside director service.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the development and initial use of Texas Cooperative Extension’s (TCE) White-tailed Deer Management Module (WDMM) delivered over the Internet. The results of this study will provide suggestions about future online wildlife management modules. Data were collected from two populations using questionnaires. A sample of six county Extension agents (CEA’s) and four Extension specialists were selected by an Extension wildlife specialist who perceived them to be professionals in the fields of wildlife and range management. This first sample is also referred to as change agents. The second sample, also known as early users, consisted of 27 anonymous CEA’s and landowners within TCE’s District 10. Quantitative and qualitative methods were used to collect and analyze data. The results are as follows: Thus...
Modern engineering design tends to use computer simulations such as Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to replace physical experiments when evaluating a quality response, e.g., the stress level in a phone packaging process. The use of computer models has certain advantages over running physical experiments, such as being cost effective, easy to try out different design alternatives, and having greater impact on product design. However, due to the complexity of FEA codes, it could be computationally expensive to calculate the quality response function over a large number of combinations of design and environmental factors. Traditional experimental design and response surface methodology, which were developed for physical experiments with the presence of random errors, are not very effective in dealing with deterministic FEA simulation out...
Two experimental configurations of linear slot nozzle virtual impactors were constructed and experimentally investigated for use as bioaerosol concentrators. In one configuration, the Linear Slot Virtual Impactor (LSVI), the nozzle was a straight slot having a length of 89 mm (3.5"). In the second configuration, the Circumferential Slot Virtual Impactor (CSVI), the nozzle was curvilinear following a circular path having a diameter of 152.4 mm (6.0") and the resulting total slot length was 479 mm (18.8"). Multiple prototypes of the two configurations were constructed having nozzle widths that varied from 0.508 mm (0.015") to 0.203 mm (0.008"). Optical and physical measurements were made of the nozzle dimensions in the critical region of the virtual impactor units. For the LSVI units the misalignment between the acceleration nozzle and t...
This thesis deals with a systematic procedure for the derivation of exact expression for the frequency equation of composite beams undergoing forced vibration with damping. The governing differential equations of motion of the composite beam are derived analytically for bending and shear deformation. The basic equations of Timoshenko beam theory and assumption of maximum rate of dissipation are employed. The principle involved is that of vibration energy dissipation due to damping as a result of deformation of materials in sandwich beam. The boundary conditions for displacements and forces for the cantilever beam are imposed and the frequency equation is obtained. The expressions for the amplitude of displacements are also derived in explicit analytical form. Numerical results of the displacement amplitude in cantilever sandwich beam v...
The purpose of this study was to assess learning in sixth grade students’ by gain scores in science and mathematics while participating in the integrative curriculum modules developed by the Partnership for Environmental Education and Rural Health (PEER) Program. The PEER Program is a collaboration between the College of Education and Applied Sciences, and the College of Veterinary Medicine at Texas A&M University. Two Integrated Curricular Modules provided the experimental treatment in this study. The alliance of the PEER Program and Texas A&M University has developed a middle school integrated curriculum based on sixth grade mathematics, science, English, reading and social studies TEKS (Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills)-based objectives. This multimedia curriculum incorporates the five disciplines into an adventure narrative fea...
