An experimental investigation was undertaken to determine the ability of Synthetic Jet
Actuators to control the aerodynamic properties of a wing. The Synthetic Jet Actuator
(SJA) was placed at two separate positions on a wing comprised of a NACA0015 airfoil.
The first of the jet positions is located at 12% of the chord, hereby referred to as the
leading edge Synthetic Jet Actuator. The second exit position is located at 99% chord of
an airfoil and hereby is referred to as the trailing edge Synthetic Jet Actuator. The two
locations produced different benefits as the angle of attack of the wing was increased.

Cancer is a leading cause of human mortality worldwide, and is expected to soon become the overall leading cause of death in the United States. Some cancers are hormone-related, including the sex-specific cancers of the breast (predominantly in women) and prostate (in men). In both cases, early stage tumors are responsive to inhibitory endocrine-based therapies. However, both cancers progress to hormone-nonresponsive states and this is in part due to altered properties of the primary nuclear hormone receptor signaling pathway (estrogen receptor [ER] in breast; androgen receptor [AR] in prostate). Although nest reuse is most commonly associated with costs such as nest instability and increased ectoparasite loads,contrary evidence supports the possibility that nest reuse might provide an adaptive function in the form of time and energy savings. The Cave Swallow (Petrochelidon fulva), which nests under bridges and culverts in east-central Texas, chooses predominately to reuse nests when old nests are available. I conducted a field experiment involving bridge pairs and single bridges, in which I applied a treatment of nest removal to one bridge of each pair and one half of each single bridge in order to test whether control bridges and nests exhibited increased productivity from the availability of old nests. This study reports the localization and partial characterization of thioredoxin from the parasitic trematode Fasciola hepatica. Snails (Pseudosuccinia columella) were raised in culture and infected with F. hepatica so that Western blotting and immunohistochemical techniques could be utilized to determine the presence of thioredoxin in different stages of the parasites development. The results of these experiments showed that thioredoxin was present in the tegument, gut epithelium, excretory canal epithelium and sperm, of the adult parasite as well as in the tegument and gut of the redia and cercaria intermediate stages. issues related to producing realistic animal gait animations and includes a case study for
rigging and animating the various gaits of a horse. Visualization of unnatural gaits for
the horse will also be discussed and animated. The process of rigging involves setting
up the character control system in a high-end 3d computer animation program such as
Maya which is used extensively by the computer graphics industry.
Pierces disease (PD) of grapevines, caused by Xylella fastidiosa, is devastating Texas vineyards. Two rapid diagnostic techniques, real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), were compared on the basis of cost, reliability, and their ability to quantify X. fastidiosa in diseased tissues. A high correlation was found between the two techniques for measuring bacterial titer in vitro. A similar relationship was not detected when applying the methods to diseased tissue. There was a 75% similarity between the techniques when used to diagnose PD in artificially infected grapevines. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) offers over 25 different outdoor recreational and outreach educational programs that target different audiences and utilize different types of delivery systems. This study was an evaluation of an educational program called Becoming an Outdoors-Woman (BOW). The evaluation produced a measurement instrument that evaluated program effectiveness and tested the instrument on past participants.

Texas A&M University (TAMU) supports a substantial breeding population of mourning doves (Zenaida macroura) with one of the highest nest densities in Texas. There has been a long history of mourning dove research on the TAMU Campus, with initial population studies conducted in the 1950s, and the most recent studies occurring in the 1980s. The TAMU Campus and surrounding areas have experienced substantial changes associated with urbanization and expansion over the last 50 years, altering mourning dove habitat on and around campus. Surface mining and subsequent reclamation often results in the establishment of large areas of grassland that can benefit wildlife. Grasslands have declined substantially over the last 150 years, resulting in declines of many grassland birds. The dickcissel (Spiza americana), a neotropical migrant, is one such bird whose numbers have declined in the last 30 years due to habitat loss, increased nest predation and parasitism, and over harvest (lethally controlled as an agricultural pest on its wintering range in Central and South America). The purpose of this thesis was to develop a means of predicting future injury among nursing personnel working in a hospital system. Nursing has one of the highest incidence rates of musculoskeletal injuries among U.S. occupations. Endemic to the job are tasks such as rolling, sitting, standing, and transferring large, and often times, uncooperative patients. These tasks often place large biomechanical stresses on the musculoskeletal system and, in some cases, contribute to or cause a musculoskeletal injury. Given the current nursing shortage, it is imperative to keep nurses injury-free and productive so they can provide patient care services.
