A mean-field theory is developed for a calculation of the surface free energy of the staggered body-centered
solid-on-solid ~or six vertex! model as function of the surface orientation and temperature. The model approximately
describes surfaces of crystals with nearest neighbor attractions, and next nearest neighbor repulsions.
The mean-field free energy is calculated by expressing the model in terms of interacting directed walks on a
lattice. The resulting equilibrium shape is very rich with facet boundaries and boundaries between reconstructed
and unreconstructed regions, which can be either sharp ~first order! or smooth ~continuous!. In addition,
there are tricritical points where a smooth boundary changes into a sharp one, and triple points where

The CNS of Lymnaea stagnalis contains two populations of egg-laying hormone (ELH)-producing neurons that differ in size and topology. In type I neurons, all peptides located C-terminally from the cleavage site Arg-Ser-Arg-Arg180-183 are sorted into secretory large dense-core vesicles (LDCV), whereas N-terminal-located peptides accumulate in a distinct type of vesicle, the large electrondense granule (LEG). Via immunoelectron microscopy, we now show that the second population of ELH-producing neurons, type II neurons, lack LEG and incorporate all proELH-derived peptides into LDCV. This finding provides the first example of a cell type-specific sorting of neuropeptides into LDCV. Iohexol plasma clearance as a measure of glomerular filtration was determined in 31 dogs and 19 cats after an
intravenous (IV) bolus injection. All animals were healthy and privately owned. Serial blood samples were taken
before and up to 4 h after tracer injection. Iohexol plasma concentration was determined using X-ray fluorescence.
A plasma tracer elimination curve was generated and clearance was calculated by dividing the injected
dose by the area under the curve estimated using a two-compartment pharmacological model. Clearance was
normalized to body weight (BW), body surface area (BSA), and extracellular fluid volume (ECFV). Mean, SD,

Schizophrenia is a severe and chronic psychiatric disorder with heritability estimates of 80-85%. Knowledge of the genetic factors that contribute to the risk to develop schizophrenia may provide insight into the etiology of the disorder, and, more important, may lead to new ways for treatment and prevention. This thesis encompasses various genetic studies on schizophrenia. Over 300 clinically well-defined patients with schizophrenia and over 800 comparison subjects, all of Dutch descent, participated in the studies. We carried out an association study of 12 genes involved in dopamine neurotransmission and schizophrenia. NCN palladium(II) complexes have been covalently attached to the N- and C-termini of L-valine and to the N-terminus
of the dipeptide L-Phe-L-Val-OMe. Remarkably, the hydrolysis of the NCN-Pd(II) L-Val-OMe compound afforded the
corresponding palladated, free amino acid without affecting the metal site. This deprotected amino acid could be coupled to any
protein, enzyme or peptidic chain by simple peptide chemistry. These bioorganometallic systems were active as catalysts in the
aldol reaction between methyl isocyanate and benzaldehyde.
